DJ Vs. Live Band

Less than 10 years ago, live bands have been the favorite choice for providing the musical entertainment during a wedding reception. But, for several reasons, the “mobile DJ” has replaced the band as the favorite. The question of choosing a live band or a disc jockey for your special event is very important. Here are a few things to think about:

Live Band

Disc Jockey

  • mostly play originals
  • need to practice
  • don't take requests
  • take breaks between sets
  • pause after every song
  • no control of volume
  • may detract attention
  • appropriate lighting
  • huge song list
  • non-stop music
  • volume control
  • needs less space
  • many genres of music
  • less expensive

- People like to dance to the music they are familiar with. Live bands may play mostly their own original songs and only a few popular songs. Live bands usually only know how to play less than 50 songs and their style of music is limited. For example, a rock band will normally only play rock songs. Remember, you want all your guests, young and old, to have a good time. Bands may not be able to change their style of music at a moment's notice.
- Bands need to practice to sound good. Some bands contract out for instrumentalists if one of their members is not available. In these cases, the new instrumentalist is given sheet music and may be playing for the first time with this band at your event.
- Most bands don't take requests, except in advance, and cannot play them if they don't know the song.
- Bands take breaks, usually 15 minutes every hour which means you may lose some guests before all the important events are done. Music they may play during their break may not keep your guests motivated to stay.
- Bands, after ending each song, pause while they decide which song to play next. This causes a break in the dancing after every song which may cause people lose their energy.
- You normally cannot change the volume of a live band after they have finished their sound checks.
- Bands may detract attention away from the guests of honour (ie. wedding couple). Your guests may end up sitting and watching the band instead of getting on the dance floor and having a good time.
- Lighting is an important part of your event. Rex Mobile will fill the dance floor with, at a minimum, three lights (disco ball, mushroom light, laser) that will provide an exciting atmosphere for you and your guests for dancing. A band, if it has any lights at all, will use them to showcase their singers and instrumentalists.
- Rex Mobile has THOUSANDS of songs available with a very wide variety of music. The larger the guest list, the more variety needed in the music. Rex Mobile's extensive music library can accommodate a wide variety requests from you and your guests.
- Rex Mobile makes sure the music never stops, so your guests can keep dancing all night long. This maintains an optimum energy level to keep your guests motivated and entertained.
- With Rex Mobile, you have complete control of the volume level.
- Rex Mobile needs much less space to setup
- Rex Mobile can play many genres of music
- Bands are overpriced. Rex Mobile will work at your event for a fraction of the price of a live band.
